Democratic Congressman Jared Golden is not toeing the party line when it comes to President Biden’s plan to forgive up to $20,000 in student loan debt for millions of borrowers.
According to the Bangor Daily News, Golden, who represents Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, called the plan “out of touch with what the majority of the American people want from the White House, which is leadership to address the most immediate challenges the country is facing.”
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, who represents Maine’s 1st district, said Wednesday the announcement was “excellent news.” But she says it doesn’t go far enough, and has called for the federal government to reduce interest rates on student loans to 0%.
The paper writes that Mainers from the class of 2020 had an average debt of around $33,000, making it the ninth-highest rate in the nation. That’s according to estimates from The Institute for College Access & Success.
The plan announced Wednesday by the Biden White House will forgive $10,000 in student loan debt for Americans making less than $125,000 a year. Those who received Pell Grants will be eligible for $20,000 in forgiveness.
