Maine’s Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the Secretary of State’s Office can begin printing ranked choice ballots for the presidential election, but a final ruling as to whether the voting system will be used is still pending.

The ruling came after Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap invalidated nearly 1,000 petition signatures gathered by the Maine GOP, with the goal of putting the issue of ranked choice voting in presidential elections to a people’s veto question. Dunlap says those signatures were not collected by a registered voter, as required under the state constitution.

Tuesday’s ruling was not based on the merits of the signature gathering process, but a procedural decision to further the delay of a lower court ruling.

That final decision was expected at some point later in the day on Tuesday.
