Portland Press Herald reports that a “proposal to hold a statewide referendum on whether to restore Maine’s original flag took another step forward this week.”

A final vote for the flag will take place in the Senate before making its way to Governor Janet Mills, as Legislature’s budget writing committee have unleashed a hold on the bill. However, Governor Janet Mills is still considering the proposal and has yet to take a position.

L.D. 86 wants voters to contemplate a change in the state flag from the now pictured seal to a moose sleeping under a pine tree with a farmer and a seaman——-a potential revived version of the 1901 flag. The bill took steps forward for L.D. 86, as lawmakers declared a referendum would have no additional costs.

If the Legislature approves and the governor signs off on the bill, then the Secretary of State with the help of the bipartisan advisory committee, will take steps in figuring out the potential designs Mainers can potentially vote on.

The bill is still under consideration as a final vote in the Senate awaits.
