A Portland man charged with murder in the hit-and-run death of his girlfriend in Acadia National Park has been transported to Maine.

Raymond Lester, 35, was arrested in Cancun, Mexico last week.

Police say he was driving the vehicle that struck and killed Nicole Mokeme, 35, of South Portland.

His girlfriend was a longtime activist, organizer and leader in the black community.

The deadly incident occurred last month at the Schoodic Education and Research Center in Winter Harbor.

Lester was returned to the U.S. last week but just arrived in Maine Tuesday night, according to a news release from Shannon Moss of the Maine Dept. of Public Safety.

He was transported to the Hancock County Jail.

Moss said Lester was expected to make his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon in Hancock County Superior Court in Ellsworth.
