A Portland man faces murder charges in connection with the death of a man in the West End over the weekend.

Police say they were called to the scene on a report of a deceased individual in an apartment at 24 Marshall Street. There, they say they found the body of 43-year-old Matthew Merrick of Portland at 5:35 p.m.

On Sunday, an autopsy was performed at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta and the death was ruled a homicide.

Portland Police say they tracked down and arrested 48-year-old Domingus Nobrega of Portland at the Scarborough Walmart on Tuesday. He was subsequently charged with murder. Nobrega was transported to the Cumberland County Jail where he is being held without bail.

The affidavit of probable cause with more information about the incident and arrest is being withheld, so other information is available

Investigators are urging anyone who has any information that might assist in the case to call them at (207) 874-8575.

Nobrega appeared in court over Zoom Wednesday. He did not have to enter a plea because he was not indicted at the time. He’s being represented by court appointed attorneys.
