ROCKPORT, Maine (WGAN) The State Fire Marshal’s Office has identified the victim in a motel room fire in Rockport.

Fire officials say 53-year-old Kevin Stanley died in a fire that broke out Monday morning. It happened in the room he was staying in on the 2nd floor of the Schooner Bay Motor Inn on Route 1.

First responders got the call around 3:30 a.m.

A police officer and another guest tried to resuscitate Stanley, but were unsuccessful.

Investigators say smoking is the likely cause, and the fire started on the mattress. No other guests were injured, but there was extensive fire and water damage to some of the surrounding rooms.
