A 51-year-old man is dead from an officer-involved shooting in Hartford.

Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies say they were called to a residence at 4:45 p.m. Saturday after an 80-year-old man reported a domestic assault by his stepson, Eric Newell.

Oxford and Androscoggin County deputies say they arrived at the scene at 229 Tucker Road and attempted to talk to Newell, but attempts at de-escalation were not successful.

Deputies say Newell came out of the house carrying a knife. They say he headed toward them and did not comply with commands from Deputy Reece Rodrique and Deputy Derek MacDonald.

Officers say Rodrique and MacDonald then shot Newell, who died at the scene. The two deputies are now on administrative leave, which is normal protocol, after officer involved shootings. The Attorney General’s Office is investigating.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office did not release any information on the 80-year-old man’s condition.
