PRINCETON, Maine (AP) A man and a deer were rescued from the icy waters of a Maine lake after the man fell into the water trying to save the struggling deer.

The Maine Warden Service says 63-year-old Rick Crowe, of Princeton, was attempting to help a deer that had fallen through the ice of Long Lake in Princeton when his canoe overturned. The service says Crowe’s wife immediately called a game warden after the Monday morning incident.

Rescuers got Crowe to a hospital. The service says he was conscious but hypothermic.

The service also says the warden and two others also retrieved the canoe and brought the deer to shore.
