AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) A man who held a knife to a security officer’s neck before being shot in a federal building in Maine’s capital has pleaded not guilty.
Derik Broox Wight, 41, of Augusta entered the plea Wednesday to a single charge of assaulting a federal officer. Wight is being held without bail pending trial in federal court.
Investigators say Wight entered the Edmund S. Muskie Federal Building on April 20 and used a knife to threaten a private security officer working for the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Protective Service. Another officer shot Wight, who was treated at a hospital.
It’s unclear what prompted the episode, which was captured on surveillance video. If convicted, Wight faces a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.
