AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) A Rhode Island man who broke into an elderly Maine woman’s home before being shot in the chest by her son will spend at least 20 years in prison.

The Portland Press Herald reports 23-year-old Dreaquan Foster, of Providence, Rhode Island, was sentenced Thursday in Augusta after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including elevated assault and burglary.

Prosecutors say the March 2017 attack began when Foster stole a car in Rhode Island and abandoned it on Interstate 95 after running out of gas. Prosecutors say Foster broke into 84-year-old Audrey Hewett’s Sidney home and attacked her son with a claw hammer when he responded to the scene.

Hewett’s son shot Foster in the chest.

Foster apologized, but maintained he had no recollection of the attack because of drug use.
