A Maine man who fatally shot a couple in Westbrook in front of their children has been sentenced to life behind bars.

26-year-old Marcel LaGrange pleaded guilty in September to murder for the shooting deaths of Brittney Cockrell and Michael Hayter in June of 2023 while the family was sitting in their car.

Court records show LaGrange, who suffers from mental health and substance abuse issues, also attempted to shoot one of the children and assaulted a nearby elderly man.

Prosecutors said LaGrange was upset after getting rejected by a woman and was looking to take it out on someone.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the judge said the life sentence handed down on Thursday was appropriate given that the killings appeared to be premeditated.
