EUSTIS, Maine (AP) A Maine hunter who had been pursuing deer in the woods just a day earlier used a boat to save a drowning buck from a freezing lake.
The Bangor Daily News reports Justin Wyman saw the struggling deer in Flagstaff Lake in Eustis on Sunday. The animal appeared to be 300 or more yards from the shore and had fallen through thin ice.
Wyman offered his boat to game wardens to try to go save the deer. They managed to get some rope around the buck’s antlers and bring the animal back to a boat landing. Eventually, they succeeded in coaxing it to land. Wyman says it later took off into the woods.
Wyman is an avid deer hunter and spent Saturday, the last day of the deer season, hunting.
