Man who went missing while searching for artifacts in Franklin County found safe

The Maine Warden Service has located a 90-year-old man who got lost in the woods in Franklin County while using a metal detector.

The service says James Thomas was using the metal detector to search around some old cellar holes when he got lost in Township E.

Thomas left a note at his home in Mexico telling his family he was headed to Township E to search for artifacts around the cellar holes.

Family members went looking for him when he didn’t return but they were unable to find him. They called 911 shortly after 11 p.m. Friday to report him missing, sparking a search that also included the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and border patrol agencies.

Thomas was located shortly after 3 a.m. by Game Warden Chad Robertson and his K9, Storm.

Thomas was very cold but not injured. It was 38 degrees and very windy when he was located.
