The Maine Department of Transportation is awarding the $8.8 million contract to East Boothbay boat builder Washburn & Doughty. Officials say the company was one of five bidders, and the only Maine shipbuilder, to submit a proposal.

It will be the first new ship built for the Maine Ferry Service in five years, and will have a capacity of 23 cars and trucks, as well as 250 passengers.
The Maine State Ferry Service serves the island communities of Vinalhaven, North Haven, Islesboro, Swans Island, Frenchboro and Matinicus.
