MLK Day: How Maine is celebrating.

Maine is celebrating Martin Luther King Day around the state today and honoring his legacy of service in lots of different ways.

Events online, and in person, from Saco to Lewiston took place today, all with the same goal of remembering what the famous Civil Rights activist fought for, and how we can make the world a better place for all of us.

The Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine paid homage to Dr. King with a Black is Beautiful Art Exploration at its facility at Thompson’s Point in Portland. The BTS Center and the Maine Council of Churches in Portland hosted a public reading of a letter written at the jail in Birmingham by Dr. King.

But the recognition of Dr. King’s work didn’t stop at just remembrance. St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Westbrook offered free resources to anyone, including haircuts, flu shots, and hot meals, as part of their “day of service”.

There was also a place for activism today as well, with Bates College in Lewiston offering a handful of workshop sessions ranging in topics from linguistic justice to integrating deep listening.

MLK day shows us that despite Dr. King’s untimely death and the racial injustices that plague us to this day, we as Mainers will always look for a better tomorrow for all of us because of his efforts.
