A Mount Desert teen died Thursday evening after his car collided with another vehicle on Route 3 in Trenton, officials say.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Dept. says that 19-year-old Gage Johnson was driving south toward MDI when the wreck occurred.

The department says that Johnson passed another vehicle, and when he tried to steer back into the southbound lane, he lost control.

Officials tell the Bangor Daily News the car veered back into the northbound lane and spun around 180 degrees before crashing into another vehicle that was headed north.

Johnson died at the scene, while the driver and a passenger in the other vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s department says speed was a factor.
