The parents of a student who died on a school hiking trip in 2021 are suing the Lake Region School District and two of its staff members for their son’s death.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the lawsuit, filed Friday, alleges that two staff members on the hiking and camping trip contributed to 17-year-old Micheal Strecker’s death.
Strecker died of exertional heat stroke during an 11-hour hiking trip in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest.
The lawsuit claims Strecker’s pleas to turn back were ignored and his access to water restricted by MSAD 61 Superintendent Alan Smith and humanities teacher Jessica Daggett, contributing to Strecker’s suffering and death on Sept. 12, 2021.
Lake Region High School had organized this overnight camping and hiking trip annually for 20 years. However, Strecker’s parents claim students and staff were not properly trained or prepared to make the trip up South Boldface Mountain, where Strecker succumbed to heat stroke on the descent.
The school has not responded to the lawsuit as of Saturday night.
