The Maine Office of Cannabis Policy says that nearly half of the medical marijuana products they recently tested were contaminated with pesticides, harmful microbes, yeast and mold.

Medical marijuana in Maine is not required to be tested like recreational products are.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the office collected 127 samples of medical cannabis and ran them through the same testing required in the recreational program.

The office says about 45 percent of the samples would have failed to meet the standards set for recreational pot.

Nova Analytic Labs also conducted a study.

Nova says that almost 21 percent of their approximately 1,400 medical samples would have failed the recreational-use pesticide testing panel.

The Office of Cannabis Policy has been pushing for a mandatory testing requirement.
