Mainers may only have to get new vehicle inspections stickers every other year if a proposed bill is approved in Augusta.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Eloise Vitelli has proposed a law that would switch to a biennial inspection system and allow state police to modernize the state’s inspection program.

According to CBS 13 news, Maine is one of three states that use paper forms and handwritten documents for its vehicle inspection program. The proposed law would allow the state to move to an electronic system.

Lt. Bruce Scott, the head of the Maine State Police Motor Vehicle Inspection Program, says he’s in favor of switching to an electronic system, but that biennial inspections could put the public at risk.

A workshop on the bill is scheduled for next week.
