AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Lawmakers in Maine are backing a bill that would require schools to report investigations of their employees to state education officials.
The Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee approved the bill unanimously Thursday. The Portland Press Herald reports it is already department policy for schools to report investigations, but it is not mandated by law.
The bill also codifies that the department must notify the district of any substantive investigation it originates–such as investigations for drug abuse and physical abuse.
The bill was opposed by the Maine Education Association, which says it was being rushed through the Legislature without appropriate review.
