PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A debated plan to regulate pesticides in Portland, Maine, now heads to a City Council meeting.

Officials say it is likely the council will postpone action at their Monday meeting and continue the debate because of a large number of proposed amendments on the schedule. The Portland Press Herald reports Mayor Ethan Strimling, a Democrat, says he supports putting off action on the pesticide ordinance if council members need more time to read over the proposal.

The ordinance is similar to one adopted by South Portland in 2016, which empowers a committee to grant waivers for synthetic pesticides and prioritizes organic lawn care.
