Police say an 85-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle while trying to cross a street in Fairfield on Thursday.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Gerald Longstreet of Fairfield was crossing Main Street outside of a crosswalk between two businesses around 6:15 Thursday evening. Fairfield police say Longstreet was hit by a vehicle being driven by 61-year-old Derek Goodwin of China.

Longstreet died of his injuries at a Waterville hospital.

Goodwin told investigators he didn’t see Longstreet because of low light and weather conditions.

Police said they aren’t anticipating any charges and that Goodwin is cooperating with the investigation.
