(WGAN) A Nor’easter brought heavy rain and high winds to Maine Tuesday night and into the day on Wednesday.
Forecasters had said wind gusts would be powerful at times, especially along the coast, where gusts were expected to top out around 50 mph.
The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory from 6 p.m. Tuesday to noon Wednesday.
The stormy weather led to difficult driving conditions and power outages in Maine.
According to a press release from Central Maine Power, by early Wednesday morning, a total of 54,500 customers had lost power.
It said the peak number of customers impacted was 27,900.
The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory for coastal Maine. Also, a Storm Warning was put out for coastal waters, but late Wednesday morning, that alert was lifted and a Gale Warning was in effect for Maine’s coastal waters.
Forecasters had said strong winds would cause hazardous seas, which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.
Mariners were urged to remain in port, seek safe harbor and secure vessels for severe conditions.
