Officials identify Rockland doctor killed when mast on historic schooner snapped

The woman who died when a mast snapped on a schooner in Rockland and collapsed on the crew has been identified.

The Medical Examiner’s Office says 40-year-old Dr. Emily Mecklenburg of Rockland was killed when the mast snapped and fell on the ship Monday morning. Three other people were injured.

The Coast Guard says there were 33 people on board the Grace Bailey when the incident happened.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Mecklenburg was a doctor at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

There’s no word on what caused the mast to come down. The Coast Guard is investigating.
