Officials investigate death at Cumberland County Jail

A resident at the Cumberland County Jail has died.

A corrections officer found 62-year-old Richard Putze of Biddeford unresponsive in his cell in the medical unit around 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Staff attempted to resuscitate him but were unsuccessful.

The sheriff’s office says Putze had recently been discharged from the hospital after a medical procedure.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office will determine a cause of death.

Portland police and the Department of Corrections are also investigating.
