Kennebunk officials are urging the public to be aware of sinkholes on Gooch’s Beach.
The fire department said Thursday that someone recently fell into a sinkhole and became submerged down to their elbows in the sand.
The sinkholes are caused by sand near the seawall at the east end of the beach by the mouth of the Kennebunk River washing away.
They said the beach is hollowed out under what appears to be solid sand in that area.
