A growing chorus of Maine politicians are calling for President Trumps removal from office.

Former Maine U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe called for the resignation of President Trump Saturday on social media.

The republican said in a tweet that Trump resign from office now to allow our nation to begin to heal and prepare for the transition to the Biden presidency.

Olympia Snowe represented Maine in the U.S. Senate from 1995 until her retirement in 2013.

Maine Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Marra also released a statement Saturday morning supporting Trump’s removal with just two weeks left in his term.

“We’ve long known that Donald Trump is unfit to be president,” the statement said. “But after months of making baseless and repeatedly disproven claims of voter fraud and attempting to overturn the results of the election he lost, he incited violence at the United States Capitol while lawmakers fulfilled their constitutional duty to count the votes of the Electoral College.”

Sen. Angus King, an independent, said Thursday that members of Trump’s cabinet should consider using the 25th amendment to remove him.

Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, also supports invoking the 25th Amendment or impeaching the president to remove him from office.

Trump was accused of inciting his followers to bust into the Capitol complex on Wednesday to try to stop the certification of the Electoral College vote.

The 25th Amendment was adopted to address situations where the president is unable to carry out the duties of the office.
