A warm March is accelerating ice melt on many Maine lakes and ponds.

This could be the first time in at least 18 years Sebago Lake has been clear of ice by April 1st in consecutive years.

Sebago Lake’s Big Bay failed to freeze over at all this winter, just like last year.

A warm December and January kept many bodies of water open or frozen with just a thin layer of ice and several people had to be rescued back in January after falling through.

While this is great news for boaters looking to get a early jump, ice fishers will be wrapping up what has already been a very short season.
