One Dead in Newfield House Fire

Newfield home fire -Maine State Fire Marshall's Office

The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fatal fire early Sunday morning at a residence at 52 Maintenance Lane in Newfield.

The Newfield Fire Department was sent to the fire, which destroyed a two-story home.

Fire Marshal investigators say they suspect that the homeowner, 39-year-old Kristofer Whittemore, may have been inside the residence at the time of the fire.

They say a search of the debris led to the discovery of human remains, which have been taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for positive identification.

The home is considered a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The photo shows the home reduced to its foundation from the fire.
