Suspect Arrested in Portland Shooting Death Monday Identified

UPDATE:

The identity of the person arrested in the shooting death of a 31-year-old Portland man Monday night is now known.

Police are accusing 21-year-old Omar Abd Elkader of Portland of murdering Edgar Cando, who died at Mainer Medical Center after being found with numerous gunshot wounds near Portland and Alder Streets.

Officers say they tracked down Elkader three hours after being called to the shooting near Dyer’s Variety Store at about 5:30 pm.

Abd Elkader was booked into the Cumberland Couty Jail at 3:05 am Tuesday morning and currently has no bail.

Police are still investigating and are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact them at (207) 874-8575. People can also text the keyword PPDME and send a message to 847411.

One person is dead, and one person is in custody from a shooting Monday night in downtown Portland.

Police announced an arrest in the shooting near Portland and Alder Streets and that a victim had “succumbed to his injuries” at 10:20 pm Monday.

Officers arrived at around 7:30 and there were about 10 police cruisers on the scene afterwards.

Yellow police tape was stretched across Portland Street near the intersection.

There have been no details on how many shots were fired or what led to the shooting.

Police are still investigating and say more details will be released Tuesday.
