One person is dead from a fire overnight Monday morning in Auburn.

The Auburn Fire Department says it was called to house just after 1:30 am on Washington Street North, where a heavy fire collapsed the roof of the two-story building and compromised the second floor.

The department says firefighters could only battle the fire from outside the home and later found the body of a dead person when investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

The body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for identification.

The State of Maine Fire Marshal’s office will be conducting a full investigation.
