AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) A bill to provide paid time off to 139,000 newly eligible workers in Maine is awaiting a decision from the Democratic governor.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says 10 states have paid sick leave. But Senate Democrats say Maine’s bill is unique because it allows paid time for other emergencies.

The Senate sent Gov. Janet Mills the bill Thursday.

Business groups criticized the original bill, which required employers with over five employees to allow them to use at least 40 hours of earned sick leave annually.

Mills offered an amendment instead requiring employers with over 10 workers to offer paid leave that could be used for illness. Her amendment restricts municipalities from passing paid leave rules.

Supporters have warned if lawmakers don’t act, the matter could go to voters.
