Homeless advocates are backing a petition demanding that the city of Portland change its policies when it comes to warming shelters and encampments.

The petition on change.org states that the city will only open a warming shelter if temperatures drop below 15 degrees or if there’s more than 10 inches of snow on the ground.

Petitioners are calling on the city council to open warming shelters when temperatures fall below freezing or when there’s freezing rain and snow.

They’re also demanding that the city decriminalize camping for the homeless.

The petition had collected about 280 signatures as of Tuesday.
