PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) The Portland Police Dept. is warning residents about a phone scam in which the caller solicits donations and asks for credit card information to process the payment.

In a news release Friday, police said the callers claim to be from the Portland Police Dept. and other agencies.

The department says it has received several reports of the scam over the past few days, and it never calls residents to solicit donations.

The release said you should never provide credit card information to callers you don’t know, and to only provide that information to merchants you have called directly.
