DEXTER, Maine (WGAN) The pilot of a small experimental plane that crashed at the Dexter Municipal Airport has died.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Rodney Wright of East Corinth was brought to the hospital Wednesday afternoon with a serious head injury. He had been taxiing the World War I-era replica plane on the runway when a gust of wind lifted it up into the air. It then crashed back down on to the runway, landing upside down.

Wright was taken by Lifeflight to Eastern Maine Medical Center where he died Thursday.

The airport manager said the plane isn’t certified by the FAA and isn’t allowed to fly, but Wright was permitted to pilot the plane on the ground and had no intention of getting in the air.
