Maine State Police have made an arrest in a cold case dating back to 1996.

Police said Wednesday that 56-year-old Jason Follette of Gouldsboro was arrested for the sexual assault of a now 47-year-old woman.

The woman, who was 21 at the time, was sexually assaulted in her apartment in Hancock in 1996.

A DNA sample was collected from the scene but until now, investigators were unable to identify it.

With advancements in DNA technology and genetic genealogy, and additional detective work, police identified Follette as the suspect.

Follette was arrested without incident and may face further charges.
