A Sebago man accused of assaulting a police officer was taken into custody.

Police responded to a report of a man flagging down vehicles and forcing them to stop near Sebago Road and Folly Road around 3 p.m. Thursday.

A deputy located the suspect and a foot chase ensued. Police said the man hit the deputy multiple times in the face while he was trying to take him into custody.

Passers-by, including an off-duty police officer, were able to help, and backup arrived to help take the man into custody.

Police identified the suspect as 42-year-old Christopher Hunt, who was treated and released from the hospital and booked into Cumberland County Jail.

Hunt was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, and violating his conditions of release. He was on six sets of bail conditions at the time of the incident.

Hunt was set to be arraigned on Friday.
