Police charge man accused of stealing catalytic converters

A Portland man accused of cutting catalytic converters off of vehicles in Wells is facing charges.

According to CBS 13 news, police responded to a storage facility on North Berwick Road, or Route 9 in Wells over the weekend after someone reported hearing mechanical sounds.

Officers saw 45-year-old Aaron Hatt running from the scene. They also found six catalytic converters and tools used to cut them out of cars.

Hatt was later arrested and charged with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and violation of conditions of release, with more charges possible.

Police also found the suspect’s abandoned car with a dog inside. The dog was taken to the Animal Welfare Society.

Hatt is being held at York County Jail without bail.
