Suspect in Maine Mall shooting turns himself in to police

A Westbrook man wanted for a shooting at the Maine Mall in South Portland on Wednesday has turned himself in to police.

20-year-old Ahmed Basheer Awad of Westbrook turned himself in around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cumberland County Jail, where he’s now being held on $100,000 cash bail.

The victim in the shooting received a gunshot wound to the leg and underwent surgery Wednesday night at Maine Medical Center.

Awad was charged with elevated aggravated assault, reckless conduct with a weapon and threatening display of a weapon.

Awad is scheduled to appear in court Friday at 1 p.m.
