A man was killed after he crashed into a tree while leading police on a pursuit in Farmington.

According to Maine State Police, Franklin County deputies were called to a home in Strong to investigate sexual assault of a child around 5 p.m. Monday. They identified 32-year-old Joshua Burdin of Strong as a suspect, who fled the scene before police arrived.

Later that night, a deputy spotted Burdin’s vehicle and attempted to pull him over. Police said Burdin failed to stop and led deputies on a low-speed chase.

After going over spike strips, Burdin accelerated and hit a tree head-on on South Strong Road in Farmington, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Burdin’s body was brought to the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

The crash is under investigation.
