A man who led police on a chase and then caused a standoff has surrendered peacefully.

Maine State Police said Thursday they were assisting Clinton Police with a “critical incident” on East River Road near the border of Clinton and Skowhegan a little before noon.

Police had been looking for 40-year-old Joshua Elliot of Clinton, who was wanted for theft and burglary. He gave chase after police located his vehicle, with the pursuit ending in Clinton when police laid spike mats.

Police say Elliot barricaded himself inside the vehicle with what was believed to be a handgun, but turned out to be a pellet gun. He made statements that he wanted to be killed by police.

After several hours, he surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.

He was taken to Maine General to be evaluated and faces several charges including eluding, failure to stop, and creating a police standoff.
