Police seek woman who brought raccoon to Maine Petco location to have nails trimmed

The Maine Warden Service is seeking information about a woman who brought a young raccoon into the Petco on Mt. Auburn Ave. in Auburn.

The unidentified woman brought the animal to the store to have its nails trimmed on Tuesday.

The warden service says “many different people handled the racoon and some even kissed it.”

Once the store manager realized what was happening, the woman was asked to leave the store and the manager contacted the warden service and the Maine CDC.

The warden service says people in the store may have been exposed to rabies, and those who had contact with the animal should contact their healthcare provider.

Raccoons are one of the most common carriers of rabies, and it’s illegal to possess wildife in Maine.

The warden service released photos of the woman on its Facebook page, hoping that someone will recognize the woman and contact them.
