Police share tips as bike thefts continue to rise in Portland

Portland Police say there have been about five bike thefts per week in the city since June.

The department estimates that there have been nearly 100 bikes stolen since June 1.

Police say cyclists should write down the serial number of their bike, take a picture with it, and keep the original sales receipt. They also urge people to use a U or D-lock, and to never use a cable lock because they can be cut through easily.

Other tips include locking your wheel and frame together, locking your bike in a well-lit and well-traveled area, and taking the battery out if you have an electric bike. Police also suggest using an anti-theft GPS bike tracker.

If possible, cyclists should store their bikes inside.

Anyone whose bike is stolen is encouraged to press charges when filing a report to increase the likelihood of being reunited with it.
