Police in Portland say officers were shot at by fireworks when confronting a group of people who were setting them off illegally.

Police say they responded to a report of a gathering of about 300 people near Kennedy Park around 9:00 p.m. Monday who were allegedly setting off fireworks illegally.

When officers arrived, the department says people in the crowd fired mortars and other fireworks at them. One 17-year-old male from Portland was arrested.

Police later responded to a report of shots fired just after midnight. From a distance, officers saw about 10 gunshots go off near Smith and East Lancaster Streets. No victims were found. One person was detained for questioning and released.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Portland police.
