PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) The Portland Board of Education stayed in session late Tuesday night trying to figure out how to trim its budget by $1.1 million. The Portland City Council forced the decision Monday night.

Superintendent Xavier Botana emphasized to fellow board members to be patient as they are forced to work with a budget they did not vote for.

“Obviously that is not the budget that anybody here submitted, so we are making adjustments,” Botana said in the session Tuesday night. “This is not a vote to agree with that amount, it’s a vote to determine how do we allocate our resources given the amount of money that has been allocated”

The discussion lasted until 10 o’clock Tuesday night when the board was forced to adjourn and postpone their decision until Thursday.

After they make their decision, the board will then present the revised budget to the city council. It will be put to residents for a vote on June 12
