The Portland School Board will vote Tuesday on limiting school choice in the district.
They will vote on a plan that would allow students to choose a preferred high school.
The plan, however, would also allow administrators to shuffle students around to balance enrollment and diversity levels.
School leaders tell the Portland Press Herald that fluctuating interest in Portland and Deering High Schools makes it difficult to anticipate resource and staffing needs.
For 43 years, eighth-grade students have been allowed to choose between Portland and Deering.
Both schools have the capacity to enroll about 800 students.
Students can also enter a lottery to attend Casco Bay High School, which enrolls 400 students.
