PORTLAND, Maine — A unique local spot designed for dog lovers and their pets has officially closed its doors for good.
Owners Brad and Marissa Sterl announced the permanent closure of Woof Play Eat, pointing to severe financial depletion brought on by extensive regulatory delays, protracted municipal inspections, and mounting pre-opening costs.
A Dream Sidelined by Regulatory Hurdles
Woof Play Eat was built around a hybrid concept: a welcoming space where local dog owners could enjoy food and drinks while their pets played in a supervised, social environment.
However, bringing the concept to reality proved far more complex and costly than anticipated. In an email statement sent to members and customers, the Sterls explained that navigating regulatory requirements through both the City of Portland and the State of Maine pushed back their expected opening timeline by about six months.
The extended pre-opening phase meant the business had to absorb heavy carrying costs, added construction expenses, and half a year of lost operational revenue before it could open to the public.
“Small businesses cannot absorb prolonged approval timelines, repeated delays, and steadily escalating costs without serious consequences,” the Sterls wrote. “Ultimately, those consequences affect not only owners and investors, but also employees, customers, vendors, and the entire community.”
Exhausting Every Alternative
According to the owners, the pre-opening delays severely drained the working capital reserved to sustain daily operations once open.
In recent months, the couple invested additional personal funds, pared back operational expenses, and pursued every available avenue to stay afloat—including crowdfunding, traditional loans, outreach to other dog-focused businesses, and meetings with potential investors. Ultimately, the business was unable to secure the capital needed to remain solvent.
Gratitude to the Local Community
Despite the premature end, Brad and Marissa expressed deep gratitude to their staff, daycare clients, restaurant guests, and community partners who supported the venture.
“We will always be proud of what Woof Play Eat represented, the community that formed around it, and the memories and friendships created here,” they shared. “Thank you for believing in us and for being part of our story.”
