The City of Portland on Thursday said that all 14 food trucks that applied for space to operate on the city’s Eastern Promenade this summer will be allowed to do so.
It comes a day after the city used a lottery system to select ten trucks that would be allowed to set up in the Cutter Street parking lot for the season. Some food truck owners protested Thursday morning.
City Manager Danielle West says all businesses that applied will be able to set up their trucks in the lot from June 15th to November 15th and will not be a charged a license fee to operate during that period.
The city says the pilot program was a “learning experience” and that changes will be made in the future if necessary.
“Given we are very close to the start of this pilot program, I wanted to make every
effort to see if we could accommodate all of the food trucks that applied,” West said Thursday. “After receiving the various truck dimensions from the operators, I’m happy to report that staff were able to reconfigure the space we have available in order to accommodate all 14 trucks.”
The lottery system was introduced following complaints in the community about trash, generator noise, pedestrian safety and parking along the Eastern Prom. That prompted the city’s decision to restrict those trucks to the Cutter Street lot.
