PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) A Portland family is safe after smoke alarms alerted them to a fire overnight.

Fire officials say the fire broke out at 80 Sherwood Street around 2:45 Wednesday morning. Two adults and two children were woken from their sleep by the alarms and were able to escape safely.

According to CBS 13, firefighters faced wind and limited water supply due to a broken fire hydrant, which made extinguishing the blaze more challenging. The fire was under control by 4 a.m. and the scene was cleared around 5:30 a.m.

Fire Chief Keith Gatreau said the fire may have had a much more tragic outcome had it not been for the building’s working smoke alarms.

The fire’s cause is under investigation.
