Portland Firefighter Being Awarded for Saco Rescue

City of Saco

A Portland Firefighter is receiving a “Saco Heroism Award” at the Saco City Council meeting tonight.

Saco Mayor Jodi MacPhail says Tyler Johnson was working with a paving crew on Cleveland Street in Saco when he notices a house fire across the street from his job site.

The mayor says Johnson entered the smoke-filled home without hesitation and helped an elderly man and two children escape just minutes before the house was completely engulfed in flames.

The three-alarm fire and rescue took place on July 29 in Saco. A release from the city says the fire was extremely difficult to deal with because of extreme weather-related heat and a metal roof in the densely packed neighborhood.

Mayor MacPhail will present Johnson with the Heroism Award from the City of Saco and the Saco Fire Department tonight at 6:30 pm.
